Get a PAN (Instant e-PAN or physical card)
The Permanent Account Number is the individual tax ID; the Instant e-PAN with Aadhaar is free.
Cost: Instant e-PAN free; UTIITSL lists ₹107 for physical card plus e-PAN and ₹72 for e-PAN only (referential)
What you need
- Aadhaar linked to an active mobile number
- DigiLocker account with a date of birth proof (driving licence, birth certificate or Class X marksheet)
- Not having a PAN already; minors are not eligible for Instant e-PAN
Step by step
- On the Income Tax e-Filing portal, choose Instant e-PAN and Get New e-PAN
- Sign in to DigiLocker and share your date of birth document
- Submit; you get an acknowledgement number by SMS
- Check the status and download the e-PAN with your Aadhaar number and OTP
- For a physical card, apply with Form 49A through Protean or UTIITSL
