- Information for the birth certificate (given at the hospital)
- Both parents' SSNs, if you know them
- If you apply later: original documents of the child's citizenship, age and identity, and of your identity and relationship
Step by step
- Complete the birth certificate application at the hospital
- Answer "yes" when asked if you want an SSN for your baby
- If you didn't, start the SSN application online at ssa.gov/number-card
- Finish the process at a Social Security office with the original documents

Tips to get it right the first time
- Applying at the hospital is the easiest way; later there may be delays while the birth certificate is verified.
- You need your child's SSN to claim them as a dependent on your tax return.
- Anyone 12 or older requesting an original SSN must appear in person.
