What you need
- An acceptable identity document with your current name
- Your Social Security number
- Residency documents, if you have never had a California license or ID
- For REAL ID: proof of identity, SSN and two proofs of residency
Step by step
- Fill out the driver's license / ID card application online
- If you want a REAL ID, upload your identity and residency documents
- Visit a DMV office with your documents and pay the nonrefundable fee
- Have your thumbprint scanned and your photo taken
- Wait for your card in the mail

Tips to get it right the first time
- In California, a no-fee senior ID is available if you are 62 or older.
- From May 7, 2025, a standard card marked "Federal Limits Apply" doesn't work for domestic flights; a REAL ID or a passport does.
- Other states have their own rules: check your state's DMV.
